The Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo
di Milano is the historic institution
responsible for the Cathedral’s
construction and maintenance since
1387.
Since that time the Veneranda Fabbrica
has been operating to ensure the
Cathedral’s conservation, its architectural
and artistic restauration, supporting
services for the religious activities,
promoting worldwide the extraordinary
heritage of art, faith and history of the
Monument.
The Fabbrica takes in hand the entire
cycle of the restoration, from the
Candoglia marble excavation to its
stone work in the Marmisti yard, to
the positioning of the architectonical
and decorative pieces of art in the
Duomo’site.
All the restoration phases need highly
qualified and skilled personnels, being
as it is the result of hundreds of years of
experience. The Veneranda Fabbrica’s
aim is to link ancient knowledge and
technology, furthermore... the love for
the Duomo makes the rest.
The deterioration of the Duomo’s marble
is though mainly from natural or man
made causes (pollution for example)
that can alter the stone.
THE MARBLE WORKERS’ SITE
Since the 1950’s, the marble
workers’ site has been located 10
kilometers from the city center. The
marble worker’s site is the yard were
high skilled Veneranda Fabbrica
stonemasons daily transform marble’s
blocks into refined pieces of art. It is the workshop where the marble
becomes architectural elements,
decorations, sculptures and statues
that make Milan’s Cathedral unique
all over the world.
